Squats Versus Lunge      The reason for my undertaking grade sheet is to show signs of improvement comprehension of the development I picked which was squats versus lurches. The body of my examination paper will give the peruser a superior comprehension of the accompanying for my particular development. Life structures: The starting point and additions that are included incorporate the Glutes-gluteus medius, gluteus maximus, Hamstrings-lliotibial band, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, adductor magnus, gracilis, semimembranosus. Calves-Gastrocnemius, soleus, peroneus brevis, flexor hallucis longus. Thighs-Pectineus, sartorius, adductor longus, tensor fasciae latae, gracilis, quadriceps, rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis. These muscles begin just underneath the gluteus maximus on the pelvic bone and join on the tibia. The essential capacities are knee flexions which include bringing the heel towards the gluteus maximus and hip expansions moving the leg to the backside. Squats and lurches are a straightforward however compelling activity for the lower bodies explicitly the legs. It assists with equalization and coordination which comes helpful for any games just as muscle advancement. The hamstrings, gluteus, and quadriceps muscles can be worked b y utilizing hand weights, free weights or just by basically utilizing your own body weight, which we allude to as exercises. The most significant point to recall about workout is that if your muscles don't get more worry than what they are utilized to, you are burning through your time. The benefits of utilizing hand weights and free weights are increasingly compelling in building up the littler synergistic (helping) muscles and stabilizer muscles. Synergism is the joined impacts of at least two pieces of powers or specialists which is more prominent than the whole of individual impacts. The bone verbalizations that are included incorporate the pelvic bone, tibia bone and femur. The delicate tissue tendons (interfaces issue that remains to be worked out) and ligaments (associates muscle to bone) that are included are the front and back cruciates, patella ligament interfaces quadriceps muscles to patella, and it additionally includes the shins. Energy: Sir Isaac Newton a researcher during the 1600’s, mentioned objective facts about the world encompassing him. The perceptions he concocted and out of those he built up the three laws of movement. Newton’s laws of movement clarify rest, consistent movement, and quickening movement; He depicted how balance and unequal powers act to cause the conditions of movements. As such they are major to understanding human development. The laws that represent my developments are the law of idleness, which is the principal law, it states â€Å"a body moving will in general stay moving at a similar speed in an orderly fashion except if followed up on by a power; a body very still will in general stay very still except if followed up on by a force†.

Moores Ford Lynching Essays - Georgia Lynching, Walton County

Moore's Ford Lynching The Long Route Home: On July 25, 1946, two youthful dark couples-Roger and Dorothy Malcom, George and Mae Murray Dorsey-were slaughtered by a lynch horde at the Moores Ford Bridge over the Appalachee River interfacing Walton and Oconee Counties (Brooks, 1). The four casualties were tied up and shot multiple times with no attempt at being subtle by a crowd of exposed men; murder weapons included rifles, shotguns, guns, and an assault rifle. Shooting a dark individual resembled shooting a deer, George Dorseys nephew, George Washington Dorsey said (Suggs C1). It has been more than fifty years and this case is as yet unsolved by police specialists. It is realized that there were atleast twelve men engaged with these killings. Remembered for the four that were known by name was Loy Harrison. Loy Harrison might not have been an undeniable suspect to the examiners, however Harrison was the sole culprit in the unsolved Moores Ford Lynching case. The thought process seemed, by all accounts, to be contempt and the wrongdoing hurt the picture of the state leaving the town in a shock because of the shamefulness that left the casualties in plain graves (Jordon,31). Numerous African Americans lived on ranches and tended for white landowners. Sway Hester was a landowner, on this homestead the Moores Ford Lynching started. On July 14, Roger Malcom followed Dorothy Malcom to Hesters ranch, Roger was contending with her. As indicated by the first FBI report, Tracker 2 Hesters child, Barney, advised Malcom to leave. As he was forgetting about a battle broke among Malcom and Hester. Malcom then pulled out a blade and cut Hester in the chest. The explanation behind the contention is dubious in spite of the fact that around then Barney Hester may have been having an illicit relationship with Dorothy Malcom. One of the neighbors said that the dark network felt it had more to do with sex than all else did (Suggs,C1). After the battle broke out, Barney Hester was taken to the clinic and Roger Malcom was brought to prison. On the morning before the lynchings, Harrison headed to the place of Dorothy Malcoms guardians, who had asked with him to get Roger Malcom out of prison since the wounding happened. Harrison would not get him from the start, yet out of nowhere altered his perspective. Harrison brought with him Dorothy Malcom , who was pregnant at that point, and George Mae Murray Dorsey to Monroe. Their Harrison marked a $600 cling to rescue Roger Malcom of prison. Harrison, with the two dark couples in his vehicle, left the region prison at about 5:30 p.m. on July 25, 1946, and headed back along the Athens Highway toward his homestead. Specialists said the course he picked was the longest path home, along a winding earth street (Suggs,C4). As indicated by Harrison, when he arrived at the scaffold at Moores Ford, a vehicle hindered his direction (Rivers,1). A horde of twenty to twenty-five exposed men halted him at gunpoint (Suggs, C1). At that point they brought the two couples into the forested are as, attached them to the trees and shot them. They were so viciously beaten and overpowered with slugs that their bodies were torn to shreds. The best way to differentiate the bodies was by their lips. Agent Bobby Howard said. When addressing Harrison he told the neighborhood specialists and the FBI he was unable to distinguish any individuals from the Tracker 3 horde or clarify how they knew what direction he was getting back home. Nobody was ever indicted for the slayings of the African Americans and why it happened is left an excessive amount of guess (Rivers, 1). The half year examination following the occurrence that came to be known as the Moores Ford lynching gathered hair-raising features that stunned the country, yet yielded nothing (Ford,1). FBI specialists inevitably left the district incapable to end the code of quietness that secured the executioners. A state official was cited as saying at the time that the countys occupants were hampering the examination by declining to uncover what they knew (Suggs,C1). More than one hundred individuals were taken before a stupendous jury, however there was never any key proof prompting the killers. Anybody that may have had data was hesitant to discuss the circumstance around then. The way that

Is Coding the Right Career Path for You

Is Coding the Right Career Path for You Is Coding the Right Career Path for You? Is Coding the Right Career Path for You?Learning to code might not be a silver bullet to slay your job and salary-related woes, but coding is a very usefulâ€"and employableâ€"skill to have.Having trouble finding a good job? Or maybe you were just fired? Well, don’t worry, because there’s an easy, obvious solution: coding! From wealthy philanthropists to annoying people on Twitter yelling at laid-off journalists, many people seem to be suggesting that coding is the silver bullet to getting a great, well-paying career. But is that true? Not exactly. What is coding anyway? You probably have a basic (ha) idea of what coding is, but just in case, let’s review quickly.A program is a set of instructions telling a computer or similar device what to do. Programs are written in a programming language, and the process of writing in one of those languages is coding. Some programming languages include Python, Java, and Ruby, but those are just three of many, many examples. However, even if you a ren’t looking to become a software developer, there may still be jobs that require or benefit from coding ability. Most companies above a certain size are going to require someone who has a level of coding skills. That’s one reason why having coding skills can open up a lot of opportunities in the job market.Coding is a great skill to build! Not only is coding a great skill to develop, but it’s one that you could theoretically learn and practice for free.“The appeal of coding as a so-called silver bullet toward good job prospects is that it is a tried-and-true profession, and with the advent of the mobile web and applications, it has become a mainstream profession,” explained Larissa Lowthorp, founder and president of TimeJump Media (@timejumpmedia). “The bar to entry to coding as a profession is easier to access than many, as it does not necessarily require a degreeâ€"if you know it, you know it.“There are many free and low-cost resources and coding boot camps availabl e online. You can learn from books, videos, and by practicingâ€"coding is a mobile career that can be done as part of the corporate infrastructure or as a freelancer. It can migrate between clients of all sizes. There are many different types and applications of coding, and there will be crossover to backend programming development. Larger companies such as Amazon, IBM, and Google have recently removed the requirement for a degree for their programmers and coders, making the profession more accessible to many.”Learning to code is not a silver bullet.Nurturing coding ability is never going to be a bad idea. But you shouldn’t get your expectations up too high. Maybe you should think about it less as a silver bullet, and more like a bronze or lead bulletâ€"which is what bullets have been traditionally made from, after all.Or even better, consider it just one tool in your employment arsenal that might not be a bullet at all!“Programming is no silver bullet to your career,” cautio ned Gloria Metrick, owner of GeoMetrick Enterprises. “If a platform or tool is ‘hot’ then everyone wants to get into it. What got you a job, initially, becomes overcrowded and commoditized, at some point. Then, the smart person would think that they should learn the next ‘hot’ thing.“Unfortunately, its not easy to convince people who want your current skill set to give you an opportunity on something new. Partly, they want to keep you working with what you already have experience with. The other issue is that others are already getting experience in the new area. In addition, they will probably be younger and want less money than you do because, as you realize, you have experience in programming, overall, that could be applied. But it doesnt always translate that easily.“In addition to all of this, programmers age more quickly than some other professions. In programming, while there are many experienced programmers with some grey hairs, theyre not always as welcome on p rojects.Thats especially true considering those of us who write code are generally seen as commodities, even when we have special skills and experience. With that, many companies dont see the purpose of hiring anyone but the youngest and cheapest widgets, er, I mean, people.”Employers know that basic (ha) coding ability isn’t nearly as rare as it used to be. Which means that many of them, including one we talked to, are going to look for additional factors when it comes to hiring. While skilled developers are in high demand these days, having basic ‘coding’ skills is neither a silver bullet nor a guarantee of employment,” explained Garry Brownrigg, CEO and founder of Quicksilk (@QuickSilk). When evaluating candidates, we consider their problem-solving capabilities as well as their ability to step into the shoes of our clients, not just their coding skills. We hire candidates that embrace low code and AI software development that negates the need for users to have any develop ment skills whatsoeverâ€"which requires that every member of our development team is constantly learning new technologies and standards. Is it right for you?OK, now that your expectations are in a reasonable place, it’s time to find out if coding is right for you!“Coding is worth pursuing for people that love logic problems, that are creative and love experimenting, and are self-motivated when it comes to creating things from scratch,” offered Joe Bailey, operations manager at My Trading Skills (@MyTradingSkills).“If you hate sitting for long hours and want normal working hours, or if you cant motivate yourself, then coding might not be the best skill for you to pursue. Youll just be punishing yourself unnecessarily.”Want some more examples of personality traits that might be conducive to coding? Here you go!“Coding requires great attention to detail: a single misplaced semicolon can prevent an entire application from running,” warned Sean Sessel, founder and director o f  The Oculus Institute.Another aspect of coding is that it will bring more pleasure to task-focused introverts than people-focused extroverts. If you require social engagement to recharge your energy, then long hours in front of a computer are not for you. Finally, coding requires a mathematical mind. If youre a detail-focused introvert yet numbers and systems and quantitative thinking arent your forte, youll be better off learning marketing copywriting.“All this said, if you are a detailed-focused, introverted, mathematical thinker who is willing to put in the effort to master multiple languages as well as connect them to each other and the business context, coding can definitely be a road to riches and freedom. At that level, it pays extremely well (easily $100/hr to $200/hr, and sometimes higher), and its a skill thats very well suited to freelancing so that you can work from anywhere in the world, when you want, how you want.”So you want to learn to code. How?Have you reached this point of the article and decided that you’d like to take a swing at this coding thing? Well, as was mentioned earlier, it can be quite easy and cheap to get started.“Perhaps the best part is that coding doesnt require a highly expensive, multiyear degree to get started,” advised Sessel. “You can learn a lot for free at CodeAcademy.com and on YouTube videos, as well as taking structured courses for very little on Udemy or other online course repositories. The best path is to build skills using these free or low-cost options and then start actually doing freelance work for people, which will expose you to a wide variety of different situations and thus give you the ability to build your skill repertoire quickly. Coding is something that is best learned by doing, and you can even start making money as you build the skill set!”If you are planning to attend a traditional university, you can work coding into your education even if you’re not working on a major focused aro und programming or development.“Combine programming with some other specialty,” suggested Metrick. “There are many degree programs for combinations such as laboratory informatics or bioinformatics, where youre combining two areas. In these examples, science and programming. As with anything else, doing this is no guarantee toward getting a job but it can help.“Look for opportunities to grow. If you get a chance to learn something else, such as project management, business analysis or other skills that work along with programming, give them a try. Then, if you entirely get pushed out of programming jobs you at least have some other experience to apply to other types of jobs.”We hope this article has given you a greater understanding of the opportunities coding may or may not offer to you. My Life Timeline Activity for Kids

History is sometimes a hard concept for kids to grasp: not that events happened, but that they happened to real people and that to those people it wasnt history—it was their present. One of the best activities to encourage children to understand the idea of being part of history is to help them create My Life Timelines depicting their history and accomplishments. Note:  Children who were adopted might find this activity a little difficult, but there are ways to adapt it to make it more general. Instead of focusing on everything that happened since your child was born, consider using less specific terms, such as past and present. That way your child can decide what events in his past are important to him without feeling pressured to know the details of what happened before he was adopted. What Your Child Will Learn Your child will get a sense of historical perspective while practicing sequencing and expository writing skills. Materials Collect these materials before you and your child get started: A roll of butcher paper  or pieces of paper taped together to create a strip 6 to 10 feet longPencils, a ruler, and markersScissorsGlue or tapeIndex cardsPhotos commemorating events of your child’s lifetime. (They don’t have to be big events, just a selection of photos that span the childs life.) Starting a Timeline Here are the steps to get the project off the ground: Provide your child with index cards and ask her to help you think about moments in life that are most important or memorable to her. Have her write her date of birth on an index card. Tell her what day of the week she was born on and the time if you know it, and ask her to add that information to the index card. Then, have her label the card with a phrase such as Today, I was born!Challenge her to think of other days in her life that were important in her personal history. Prompt her to think about things such as brothers or sisters being born, first days of school, and family vacations. Ask her to write down the events and describe them, one on each index card, without worrying about whether they are in order.Complete this process up to the present day. The last card might say, Made a My Life Timeline! When she’s finished coming up with events, have her place all the index cards on the floor or a table. Now, ask her to put the events in sequence according to when they happened , starting with the oldest (birth date) on the left and working toward the most recent on the right. If your child has trouble remembering which events came before others, help her identify when things happened. Providing her with the month and year will be a big help in putting her personal history in order.Look through the photos together to try to find one to match each index card, but don’t stress if there isn’t one. Your child can always draw an illustration of an event. Creating the Timeline Heres how to put the project together: Lay the piece of butcher paper on a hard work surface. (The floor works best.)Help your child use the ruler to draw a horizontal line in the middle of the paper from one end to the other.Start at the left end of the paper and draw a small line upward (vertically) from the middle of the paper. This mark will represent the day your child was born. Have him put the index card bearing his birth date above that line. Then ask him to make a similar line at the very end of the paper, with an index card bearing today’s date and a little bit about himself and his life today.Have him place the rest of the index cards in order between those two dates, making a small line to connect each card to the line in the middle of the paper.Ask him to match the photos or drawings with the events and put each one below the correct index card under the line on the paper. Glue or tape the pictures and index cards in place.Let your child decorate the timeline, trace the information he’s written with markers, and then tell you his personal history.

Analysis Of The Book Three Little Words By Ashley...

Introduction The book I read was ‘Three Little Words.’ It is written by Ashley Rhodes-Courter. This book was published in 2008. It was published in New York, New York. The book was published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers Company. It has a total of 336 pages. Three Little Words is organized in chapters. It has a total of 13 chapters. This book is a memoir so it is all about Ashley’s life in the foster care program. Each chapter talks about the hardships she went through at all the different foster homes. Ashley was taken into foster care when she was only three years old. She was in 14 different homes in a total of nine years. She had a brother, Luke that was also in the foster care program with her. They were separated multiple times, but always ended up at the same foster home together. It was not until Ashley was adopted that they were separated for good. Ashley’s mom was in prison multiple times, she was also a drug addict. She had visitation righ ts, but her visitations were always supervised. At these visitations she always promised Ashley that she was going to turn her life around, and get both her and Luke back. It never happened; as a result, Ashley had a lot of trust issues and a hard time believing people actually cared for her. Ashley was adopted and had a tough first couple of years adjusting to having a family. It wasn’t until about the end of the book where she finally got used to having a real family. Summary Lorraine Rhodes was a single

Research methods in Nursing and Social Work: Critical appraisal paper. The aim of this assignment is to look at two written research papers and carry out a critical assessment on them. I will present the assignment in two parts, Appendix 1 which is the first research paper called, â€Å"What professionals think about offenders with learning disabilities in the criminal justice system†. We will write a custom essay sample on Research Methods in Nursing and Social Work or any similar topic only for you Order Now This article conducts a research and its aim is to find out whether people with learning disabilities are being treated differently with the justice system, it focuses on the ideas of different professionals that work in the system and their view on the subject matter. Appendix 2 which is the second paper is called, â€Å"The prevalence of intellectual disability in a major UK prison†. This paper the first steps to undertake when critiquing a research paper is, to explain the piece by summarising its main aims and outcomes that have been gained through the research. One of the first tasks of critiquing a research article is to try to explain the performance and tasks that have taken place. Critiquing research involves a careful examination of all aspects of a study in order to judge its strengths, limitations, meaning and significance† (Hek, 1996). Appendix 1: Participants: The study was structured in a interview in order to collect the data. The Participants that were used all came from different professional background this meant that there was a good multidisciplinary team of respondents. Title: The title was very clear and to the point, it successfully reflects the purpose of the study and its findings. Abstract/Summary: This was written in a clear manner, which was very easy to understand and therefore was not complicated. The purpose, method and findings were comprehensibly outlined in a brief summary. Materials: The interview was Semi-structured, the advantages of using this method were that, the audience is specifically targeted it is also the best way to capture how a person thinks or feels on a particular topic, it can let the interviewee speak with more than just their words but with facial and bodily xpression too. Also, it allows the interviewee to go into as much depth as they feel they want to, whereas other interview types wouldn’t allow this type of freedom. It can also be a good method as it can lead to further questions that haven’t been written down but might be appropriate, so as to get a better perspective. The method is really suitable to sensitive issues as this one. However, there are draw-backs to the method, the main being that it is so time-consuming. Not just the collecting of the data, but the transcribing and analysis of the data. Also, it is very easy to digress and become sidetracked with anecdotes and generally inappropriate information. The preparation and time must be put into the organisation of this type of interview, to make sure that the questions that are asked are relevant to the subject matter and that they are neither confusing nor leading. Data collection: The data collection used Semi-structured interviews which were conducted in a face to face manner. The timings on the collection of data varied so that they suited the respondents, this was good as it allowed the respondents to do the interview when they were available this showed that the researchers where flexible. The duration of the actual interview where between, 0. 5 hr and 2. 5 hr, which was approximately 1 hr each, this was a weakness because it was important that each respondent had the equal and same amount of duration within the interview, and that by varying the times allowed some respondents to produce more information or answer questions in more depth as others. The interviews were recorded on tape this was good method of recording because sometimes when the information is written it can be translated different by the person who is recording the answers as they may interpret it differently. The other drawback that occurred in this study is that the exact design of the questions been asked to the respondents varied, this can affect the results as one person may elaborate more than someone else and therefore has the opportunity to be asked further questions. The exact format of each individual was determined by the participant, as the individual questions presented to each person varied according to earlier individual responses. † (Appendix 1) Results: The results obtained where accurate and well organised into three themes. They where clear to understand and very straightforward. The themes that emerged allowed the aim of the study to be acknowledged through its results, this was the most important part of any study. Discussion:  The idea of training for the Medical teams and professionals within the justice system is an excellent way to improve the awareness of learning disabilities and so that within the justice system it van be recognised and therefore allows a better awareness of it. The resolution to not change laws but however to accommodate them so that they reflect the needs of people with learning disabilities is also a very positive result. The fact that all participants had an interest in the study of people with learning disabilities which is why they accepted to be a part of the study. However the results varied in ethical values and opinions on that subject matter by the participants. Ethical: The research produced an ethical approval to proceed with the study from the research ethics committee at the University of Nottingham, this showed that the study was carefully thought of and recognised before it was conducted. The confidentiality of all the participants was kept, as all the respondents names were not identified anywhere in the study. Even though the details of the participants background and profession where mentioned this was carefully demonstrated as to not be able to identify any of the individuals. 10 Grammar and Punctuation Rules to Always Remember - Freewrite Store

10 Grammar and Punctuation Rules to Always Remember - Freewrite Store The English language, cobbled together over centuries from Germanic, Scandinavian, Latin, French and Greek sources, is a minefield of confusing (and often contradictory) rules. So it’s no wonder that writers frequently struggle with the correct use of words and punctuation. However, most readers will agree that writing littered with errors comes across as sloppy and unprofessional, damaging their trust in the message and the author. To help you improve your writing, here’s a list of some of the most common mistakes that writers make, and tips on how to avoid them.   1. Apostrophes Apostrophes have two main uses – in contractions and to show possession. They’re quite different, so we’ll cover each one separately. Contractions: A contraction is where you take two words and combine them, missing out a letter or two along the way. Should not = shouldn’tI have = I’veWe will = we’ll Generally, wherever the missing letters are, that’s where the apostrophe goes. You can also apply this rule if you’re writing dialogue where someone cuts off the beginning or end of a word, like ‘ello, or nothin’. Possessives: A possessive apostrophe is used to show ownership. It’s done by placing ‘s after the noun. I am walking Pete’s dog this morning.I need to buy a gift for my sister’s birthday. The children’s bus was late again. Things get slightly more confusing, however, if the noun already ends in an s. In this case, you need to consider how you would say it out loud. If you would add an es sound to the end of the word, then you write it with ‘sat the end. I was summoned to the boss’s office. The bus’s tire was completely flat.Dennis’s parties were legendary. However, if you wouldn’t add an es sound to the end of the word, then a lone apostrophe is appropriate. I am walking my parents’ dog this morning. The kids’ hamster had five babies. The Hastings’ roses are magnificent this year. When not to apostrophize Don’t forget that apostrophes have no place in ordinary plural nouns, like bananas, toys, or megabytes. An apostrophe in an ordinary plural is sometimes called a â€Å"greengrocer’s apostrophe† because it could often be found on signs in fruit and vegetable shops. Apostrophes also don’t need to be used in dates or acronyms. I was born in the 1970s.Nobody uses CDs anymore. The exception is if you’re omitting letters or numbers or using the apostrophe possessively. The ‘80s produced some amazing music.Landing a probe on Mars was one of NASA’s greatest achievements. You also never use an apostrophe in a possessive pronoun. Theybecomes theirsHerbecomes hersItbecomes its 2. Semicolons Much confusion surrounds the use of the semicolon, but it’s actually quite simple to utilize. It only has two functions. The first is to join two related clauses in a sentence. There are three conditions of use: both parts of the sentence must be able to stand alone, they need to relate to each other somehow, and they need to be of equal weight. For example: I love Hawaiian pizza; the pineapple tastes amazing.I burned my tongue on the pizza; the pineapple was too hot. If you put a coordinating conjunction between the two clauses (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet), then you would replace the semicolon with a comma. The other use of a semicolon is when you’ve got a long sentence, and you’re listing groups of items. To prevent reader confusion, you can use a semicolon between each group. For example: My son needs a lot of things for his first day of school: pens, pencils and markers; exercise books, writing pads and binders; and erasers, paperclips and a calculator. 3. Oxford Commas The Oxford comma (aka serial comma or Harvard comma) is the comma that occurs before the and in a list. The second comma in the list below is the Oxford comma. I like pizza, cake, and chocolate. For such a small piece of punctuation, it has generated a lot of debate. Many style guides now prescribe that the Oxford comma should be omitted. At the same time, it has a lot of very vocal fans who insist it should be retained. If you don’t have a set style to follow, there’s no definitive rule beyond being consistent with whichever method you choose to follow. Most of the time, taking out the Oxford comma has no detrimental effect on the structure of a sentence. However, there are occasions where omitting the Oxford comma leads to ambiguity and, in those cases, it should always be used. For example, here’s a real-life quote: Amongst those interviewed were Merle Haggard’s two ex-wives, Kris Kristofferson and Robert Duvall. Without the final comma, the sentence appears to suggest that Merle Haggard was married to both Kris Kristofferson and Robert Duvall. The use of an Oxford comma would have made it obvious that this was a list of four separate interviewees. So, if you have no set style guide to follow, the choice to deploy the Oxford comma rests with you – but if you prefer not to use it, make sure its omission doesn’t change the meaning of your sentence. Next, let’s look at commonly mixed-up words. Most of these are words that sound the same but have different applications. 4. Your/you’re Your = it belongs to you. Your library book is overdue. You’re = the shortened version of ‘you are’. You’re welcome. When in doubt: Try replacing the word with you are. If it doesn’t fit, then use your. 5. There/they’re/their There = a place. Put it over there. They’re = the shortened version of ‘they are’. They’re going to be late. Their = belongs to them. The couple enjoyed their pizza. 6. To/too To is a preposition with many meanings, including â€Å"towards† and â€Å"until†. Let’s walk to the bus. It should get here at five minutes to midday.Too is an adverb that means â€Å"also† or â€Å"very†. I want to catch the bus, too, but I am too tired to walk there. 7. Who’s/whose Who’s = the shortened version of â€Å"who is†. Who’s that? Whose = belonging to who? Whose bag is this? When in doubt: Try replacing the word with who is. If it doesn’t fit, use whose. 8. It’s/its It’s = the shortened version of it is. It’s a beautiful day. Its = belonging to it The cat swished its tail. When in doubt: Try replacing the word with it is. If it doesn’t fit, use its. 9. Less/fewer Both less and fewer mean the same thing, but they are not interchangeable. There’s a fairly simple way to work out which one you should be using. Less is for situations when you’re using words that don’t normally have a plural, aren’t made plural by adding an s,and cannot be counted. Examples of this include water, rain, and traffic. There was less water in the bath than I expected.I had hoped for less rain today. If more people caught the bus, there would be less traffic. Lessis also used when referring to numbers, either on their own or in measurements of time, distance or weight. The bus will arrive in less than five minutes. It is less than a mile away. The pizza recipe uses less than 12oz of flour. On the other hand, fewer is used for items that can be counted or made plural by adding an s, like cats, jobs, and roses. There are fewer cats in the neighborhood since the dog moved in.The rise in automation means there are fewer jobs available. This summer we have fewer roses in our garden. When in doubt: See if you can add a number to the word. You can’t say â€Å"there is five traffic,† so you would use less. You can say â€Å"there are three pizzas,† so you would use fewer. 10. Everyday/every day People tend to write this as one word. However, that changes the meaning. Everyday = common, usual. I’m wearing my everyday clothes. Every day = each day. The Queen doesn’t wear a tiara every day. When in doubt: Replace everyday with each day. If the meaning of the sentence remains intact, then you need to write everyday as two separate words. Given the complexity of the English language, there are exceptions to most of these rules. However, the ones we’ve outlined here will apply to most instances where you need to use these punctuation marks and words.  Are there any writing mistakes we've left out that drive you nuts?   Let us know in the comments section below!  Ã‚      About the author: Claire Wilkins is a freelance copywriter and editor from New Zealand. The Meaning Behind West African Kente Cloth

The Meaning Behind West African Kente Cloth Kente is a brightly colored, banded material and is the most widely known cloth produced in Africa. Although kente cloth is now identified with the Akan people in West Africa, and particularly the Asante Kingdom, the term originates from the neighboring Fante. Kente cloth is closely related to Adinkra cloth, which has symbols stenciled into cloth and is associated with mourning. History Kente cloth is made from thin strips about four cm thick woven together on narrow looms - typically by men. The strips are interlaced to form a fabric which is usually worn wrapped around the shoulders and waist like a toga - the garment is also known as kente. Women wear two shorter lengths to form a skirt and bodice. Originally made from white cotton with some indigo patterning, kente cloth evolved when silk arrived with Portuguese traders in the seventeenth century. Fabric samples were pulled apart for the silken thread, which was then woven into the kente cloth. Later, when skeins of silk became available, more sophisticated patterns were created - although the extortionate cost of the silk meant they were only available to Akan royalty. Mythology and Meaning Kente has its own mythology - claiming the original cloth was taken from the web of a spider - and related superstitions - such as no work can be started or completed on a Friday and that mistakes require an offering to be made to the loom. In kente cloth colors are significant: Blue means loveGreen means growth and energyYellow (gold) means wealth and royaltyRed means violence and anger,White means goodness or victoryGrey means shameBlack means death (or old age) Royalty Even today, when a new design is created, it must first be offered to the royal house. If the king declines to take the pattern, it can be sold to the public. Designs worn by Asante royalty may not be worn by others. Pan-African Diaspora As one of the prominent symbols of African arts and culture, Kente cloth has been embraced by the broader African diaspora (which means people of African descent wherever they might live.) Kente cloth is particularly popular in the United States among African-Americans and can be found on all types of clothing, accessories, and objects. These designs replicate registered Kente designs, but are often mass-produced outside of Ghana with no recognition or payment going to the Akan craftsmen and designers, which Boatema Boateng has argued represents a significant loss of income to Ghana. Comment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Comment - Essay Example The post further states that we should begin to be mindful of the waste we dump into our environment and stop giving much thought to the big cars we want to drive without caring about the effect it has in our environment (Kasting and Seifert 123). The importance of caring for our natural resources like the water catchment areas and reducing the rate of using fossil fuels to help restore our environmental sanity is also highlighted in this post. The industrial revolution increased the need for more raw materials and this prompted the increased degradation of our natural resources to help feed the demand for industrialization but at the expense of destroying our environment. Technological growth has also not had any significant impacts on the fight to end global warming but has created avenues for people to have shortcuts and cheats in accomplishing their tasks (Kasting and Seifert 123) In conclusion, I want to concur with the post that all the blame of the environmental damage so far done on our environment is on human beings due to the activities and inactivity towards preserving God’s gift to

Morality in Humanities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Morality in Humanities - Essay Example An obvious question that would crop up in the restless mind of man would be, â€Å"Why are we born; and what is our purpose in life?† Religion ideally answers this question and hence has been a pivotal factor for determining the transitions in the standards of morality. A striking example of this is the authority of the clergy till some centuries ago in all parts of the world. All major decisions on judging or defining morality, whether social or personal had some or the other influence of the priesthood. However, religions as practised by the masses have also undergone various changes. It is no more as rigid and sacrosanct today as it was earlier. People now tend towards applying critical and rational thinking. For instance, a comparatively larger percentage of today’s population is more concerned and observant about animal rights, than about personal salvation. (The rise and activities of various animal rights groups can attest this fact.)Hence, animal sacrifices for religious reasons are close to hitting nadir in the American society. Thus it can be argued that relaxation of religious dogmas have led towards new moral standards, those of eco-sensitivity and freedom from religious restrictions, the degrees varying according to the demographics. Today’s man is far-more free-thinking and tolerant and considers it below his moral standards to deny the rights of living to others for personal gains. Therefore, at least in the west religion is gradually losing its hold over morality since most of those nations are secular and statistics suggest that more and more people are turning towards atheism and agnosticism there. For example in the U.S. the figure is 15% in 2008 compared to about 8.2 in 1990. (Kosmin, Keyser, Highlight) Another prominent factor governing the transitions in morality is family. Man spends most of his life with his family adhering to its needs, demands and laws since it is the same family

Alternatives to Live-Action Fictional Films :: Film, Documentary

Is there an alternative to live action fictional films? And if there is an alternative is there a chance it could be entertaining? Who doesn’t enjoy a good fiction film? In Film: An Introduction by William H. Phillips, we learn that the alternative to such films can be both enlightening and entertaining (299). What type of film could be both enlightening and entertaining? Documentaries are. There is potential in a documentary film, also referred to as non-fictional films, which fictional films cannot grasp. According to Jack C. Ellis, a known documentary film critic, documentaries â€Å"(1) communicate insights, achieve beauty, and offer understanding.† They also â€Å"(2) improve social, political, or economic conditions† (qtd. in Phillips 299). In ways documentary films are similar to fictional films. Both types of films have infinite possibilities of topic choices to choose from and have a crew to influence and manipulate the film so that it can be accepted the way they want it represented. However, documentary films are created to be works of informative and factual art. Fictional films, although they may stem from the ground of truth, they branch into the realm of unrealistic entertainment (316). But why is there a big market for documentaries? The answer is simple. Each person alive; whether they are young, old, intelligent, undereducated, black, white, Baptist, atheist, everyone has an interest in something and documentaries can inform an audience about that particular interest (316). There are two types of documentaries, the narrative and the non-narrative. The majority of documentary films are made up of non-narrative films, meaning that there isn’t an actual story being portrayed in the film rather just a list of information that make an argument (301). Narrative documentaries create and develop a story, normally following a person and their ambitions. This type of documentary is more comparable to fictional films versus non-narrative films because the information presented does not have to be sequential as long as it is factual (302,303). Both types of documentaries use artifacts, such as photographs, that pertain to the subject in their film and are spliced from one frame to another in the editing process, to force the point of view that the director wishes to portray onto the viewer (301 & 306). This is the reason that Phillips refers to documentaries as ‘Mediated Reality’. A documentary film is biased and cannot be objective. It may be perceived as truth by viewers, but there is a difference between the genuine footage that was recorded and the censored scenes that were developed in editing.

Finding Neverland Essay

The movie Finding Neverland is about the writer J. M. Barrie and his journey of writing plays about imagination and happiness. Barrie has a close relationship with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, and her sons, who give Barrie the idea of the well-known play Peter Pan. J. M. Barrie attends the reception of his latest play, ‘Little Mary’ and from this reception he meets Sylvia, who is a widow now. Barrie enjoys spending time with Sylvia and her four sons, and through this proves to be a great playmate and father-figure for the boys. Sylvia’s mother, Emma du Maurier does not like the amount of time Barrie spends with her family. Emma wants to take control of her daughter and grandsons, since Sylvia is becoming very weak from an unidentified illness. As Sylvia becomes more and more ill, she is unable to attend Barrie’s new play production. However, Barrie arranges a mini-version of his new play to be presented at her home. Finding Neverland can be interpreted using the archetypal literary criticism, as it does centre on the idea of the unconscious mind and its ability to hold and create universal symbols and patterns to which all humans can relate to. The archetypal hero character of this movie is playwright J. M. Barrie. Barrie, in the beginning of the movie, does not have any ideas of creating a new play. However, when he meets Sylvia’s four sons; George, Michael, Jack, and Peter, through their imagination, Barrie gets ideas. The imagination starts, when Barrie meets the Llewelyn family at London’s Kensington Gardens, while walking his St. Bernard dog. Ever since that day, Barrie has been spending a lot of time with Sylvia and her sons, creating imaginary worlds of pirates, castles and cowboys. For Barrie to create these imaginary worlds for the children, they cheer up and enjoy the time, since they do not have a father anymore. Apart from all this fun and enjoyment, there is a femme fatale character who is Emma du Maurier, the mother of Sylvia. Emma does not want Sylvia and her sons to be spending so much time with Barrie, because she thinks that he is corrupting their minds. By this, Emma tries to manipulate Sylvia into stopping the amount of time she and her sons spend with Barrie, and more time with the family. However, through all this manipulation and control from the mother, Sylvia and Barrie can be seen as two star-crossed lover, since they both love and care for each other in a close relationship. In Finding Neverland, the archetypal situation is for Barrie to create a new play. Barrie has a quest to complete, which is to get ideas about the next play he should write. For Barrie to meet Sylvia’s four sons, he got his whole idea of writing his next play, from these four boys imagination. Barrie’s has now reached his task, and that is to create a play using the imagination of kids and put it on stage to show to the public. Along with the quest Barrie has to undertake, there is an archetypal symbol of light and dark. The symbol of light in this movie, are the four boys and Sylvia. Without them, Barrie would be in a loss of ideas, since he gets the idea for his new play from his experience with the Llewelyn family. The symbol of darkness in this movie is the mother of Sylvia, Emma du Maurier. Emma, talks behind Barrie’s back and tries to tell Sylvia things about Barrie that are not true. Besides all the back talk, Barrie still is persistent in completing his task and showing the public his new play. Through further analysis of the movie Finding Neverland, Northrop Frye’s Four Story Model can be used to analyze this movie. The movie Finding Neverland can be analyzed as a romance story, since there is a world of innocence. In this world of innocence, the four boys are the ones who joyfully imagine with Barrie all the wonderful stories of pirates and kings and fulfill the desire for order and meaning. The hero, Barrie has an adversary who is Emma, the mother of Sylvia. She tries and stops Sylvia and her sons from playing with Barrie. The theme of this movie, makes use of visions and revelations, by the fact that Barrie gets the visions of his new play from all the imagination that the four kids show. Through these imaginations, Barrie shows a progress toward fulfillment in creating his new play. The basic plot, is Barrie goes on a perilous journey, a struggle follows in which he proves himself in the doing the task. When Barrie completes the quest of creating the new play, which is known as Peter Pan, there is triumph and exaltation of the hero Barrie. The basic imagery seen in this film, are trees and animals that come to life and assist Barrie in completing his quest, from all the imagination and creativity the four kids show to Barrie. To conclude, Barrie has accomplished his main goal, through all the creativity and imagination that was offered with the help of Sylvia’s four sons. Finding Neverland is a story that really emphasizes the importance of imagination and how it can really help someone in times of tragedy and loss. Humans need that creativity to imagine things in another world and use it for the benefit for oneself and other, just as Barrie did for Sylvia and her family.

Gay Marriages Essay - 1644 Words

Gay Marriages Growing up in a heterosexual neighborhood, gay couples were not something that you came across every day as you do in today’s time. At the age of 22, Dawn was introduced to her first gay couple, Mike and Thomas. They were friends of her husband. She had never known a gay couple before or even a gay person. It was extremely strange and uncomfortable for Dawn to be in the presence of two gay men. It was nothing out of the ordinary at first. To Dawn, it was just like two men living together as roommates until they kissed. Dawn felt like she was invading on their privacy as she sat and watched them kiss. She quickly turned her head so she would not be intruding. Now, Dawn is extremely close to Mike and Thomas.
